Junior Walker and the All-Stars - The Essential Collection
Spectrum/Motown - 544 050 2

More goodies from the Motown stable as the late Jnr Walker blows his way through eighteen great songs that have made him a household name since 1965 when he burst onto the scene with his million seller 'Shotgun'. Since then his music has graced many a dance floor and he has deservedly earned a reputation of being one of the best saxophonists in the world (a reputation that doesn't come easy). The only criticism one has with this set is that the majority of the eighteen tracks have appeared time and time again only Junior's easy to obtain catalogue material, and the big hits such as 'Road Runner' and 'How Sweet It Is' can be found on any Motown various artists CD's.

That isn't to take away the fact that there is a new generation of youngsters discovering the delight's of this great mans music and this release should prove popular amongst those wishing to introduce themselves to an instant 'best of' package at under a tenner. I was lucky enough to witness Junior Walker in a live situation on many occasions over the last thirty years or so and came very close indeed to securing an interview with the great man, which sadly never came to fruition as he died a couple of years ago, leaving us with a great legacy of music.

The big hits are all here including the northern soul favourite 'I Ain't Going Nowhere' plus a couple of extra goodies too for added sales potential such as 'Right on Brothers and Sisters' which originally appeared as the 'b' side of a UK maxi single which had 'Walk in the Night' as the top side. One track of notable interest is his seventies track 'I Need You Here Right Now' which saw Junior team up with the legendary Thelma Houston for a UK single release which has always proved popular with collectors. The Johnny Brisol/Harvey Fuqua written 1969 smash 'What Does It Take' is as was hoped included here, and its a track I never fail to enjoy and look back on with fond memories. This was possibly one of the most requested Junior Walker tracks on my former Sunday Soul Club radio show of the middle nineties.

I've decided to throw in a very special audio clip for you to listen to in the form of 'Tune Up' which has become a very sought after item on the collectors scene in any format whatsoever and is a tremendous track.
This CD is worth every penny for this track alone. The package as a whole though is thoroughly recommended. Check it out!
