Another Berry Gordy film production which clearly demonstrates the direction in which the company were moving during the seventies. Ms Ross was clearly his ‘jewel in the crown’ having clocked up an impressive amount of hit single as a solo artist, as well as her collaborations with Marvin Gaye.
Ross had already appeared in ‘Lady Sings the Blues’ to critical acclaim and this film followed suit and made her an even bigger household name. Success seemed automatic as everything she did seemed to turn to ‘gold’ and the days as lead singer of The Supremes must have seemed a distant past. The film was a stunning success and Diana’s leading role was the perfect choice.
Music wise the production credits went to Michael Masser whose production credits with other named artists is well documented. Other notable writers/producers/arrangers include Gil Askey (Temptations) and Jermaine Jackson, plus Patrice Holloway and Gloria Jones all get their songs included in the film.
It is of course the hit single ‘Do You Know Where You’re Going To’ that everyone remembers with affection and this Gerry Goffin written song was the perfect main title, with Diana’s vocal performance as perfect as you could wish for, she had never sounded, or looked better and the rest as they say is history.
Diana’s film career at Motown was somewhat short lived and she continued her recordings for the label clocking up even more hits throughout the rest of the decade. Her pedigree is unquestionable and she will for many be seen as the ultimate female solo artist this century ranking alongside the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, and that itself speaks volumes.
If you enjoyed the film, and are a Ross fan then this will be an essential purchase.
