The Most Popular Music Of Mowtown
"What's going on" "Reach out (I'll be there.)" "Stop in the name of love" and of course, "three times a lady" are all classic songs.
All those songs sung with such love, passion and soul came from mowtown records, and they still sound great even in today's fast-paced world.
Another signature sound from mowtown was the "call-and-response" singing that traces its roots back to old Gospel music.
Mowtown records began in the early 1960's.
The name mowtown comes from the two words motor and town, and is a reference to Detroit Mi. Mowtown songs have a certain sound that is all their own, mixing soul with pop music, and rhythm and blues to create music the still influences today's sounds and artists. What made mowtown records such a unique venture was that this was a record label started and run by an African American man named Berry Gordy. Many artist featured on mowtown were also African American and their great sound and music crossed over racial devides and was heard and enjoyed by people's of all races and creeds.
Mowtown records also brought in many new young artists who were very green and inexperienced.
They were taught how to move, dress, and act with grace and dignity so that mowtown not only sold a sound but an image to the world. Mowtown wanted to change people's stereo type image of African Americans in the 1960's. It worked; the elegant style and dress of Mowtown's artist became an expectation of every new artist that came from the label. Stevie Wonder was only eleven years old when he was signed to classic mowtown records. Stevie's last name was originally Morris but when Gordy heard Stevie sing, he thought he was, "a wonder" and thus the name stuck. Gordy was intruduced to Marvin Gaye by his brother-in-law, who told him he had to hear this DC based singer who at the time was in group called Chess. Thanks to mowtown records, we live in world with Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Smoky Robinson, and Marvin Gaye and the world swings a little harder now.
